About Musica!

Musica_004THE ORGANIZATION

Musica! was founded in January 1990 by a small group of 8 singers.  This small group came from a larger ensemble in the area that had gathered together to sing  for a friend’s Christmas party. They liked singing together so much they decided to continue. Picking the repertoire, rehearsing, and all the business related matters were decided by group consensus. Within a year the group expanded to sixteen singers, and a subscription concert series was launched. The group became a registered non-profit organization in 1992–able to receive tax deductible donations because of their 501c(3) classification by the State of Ohio.

The rehearsal-by-committee process became a stumbling block. They invited Dr. John Leman of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music to coach the group. This association was immediately fruitful. John became Musica! first Artistic Director in 1993 and continued until 1999.

Musica! dedicated it’s first CD, Great Day, to John and thanks him for his support and his special kind of encouragement. Musica! was fortunate that Dr. Robert Jones of the University of Dayton was willing to fill the Artistic Director role in the spring of 1999. Bob continues to enhance the group’s performance level.

Musica! continues to provide a subscription concert series, recordings, performances at community and private functions, and performances at professional music conferences. Musica! works diligently to improve the quality of their performance and to broaden the appeal of quality choral music.
